Welcome to the MeteoTechWx School of Weather!

Back atcha again with Tier Two: A High Risk of Learning (and Other Severe Weather Topics)! As with Tier One, this is a course made for anyone of any age who is interested in learning about weather BUT doesn't want to pay thousands of dollars in college tuition just yet. And did we mention there's no calculus involved? The SIX topic videos in this course are made to be not only educational but fun, entertaining and easy to understand. After all, learning about weather is fun! Check out the Tier Two introduction video below for some more information, and we'd love to see you over in video one.

-Jim and Kayla

(Disclaimer: Although we are both degreed meteorologists, this course is not the same as getting a degree from a university.)

This self-led course is for you if:

  • You're passionate about severe weather.
  • Math is okay, but not doing math sounds like a better idea.
  • You've watched the movie Twister at least 5 times.

This self-led course is NOT for you if:

  • You don't really care about severe weather.
  • You are only interested in learning about weather if there's calculus involved.
  • You've never heard the name "Jim Cantore".

Meet Jim and Kayla

Hey!

We are MeteoTechWx, or as we’re better known to most, Jim and Kayla Kalenian. We are a father/daughter team of meteorologists based in central North Carolina who love all things weather, storm chasing, and coffee.  While our main interest is in severe weather, we enjoy anything that gets us out into the world doing what we love.

We are both degreed meteorologists. Jim graduated from SUNY Albany in 1992, and Kayla graduated from UNC Asheville in 2017.

The 6 Topics in Tier Two: A High Risk of Learning (and Other Severe Weather Topics)

Topic One: What is Wind?

- Expanding on that monster of a definition from Tier One and setting up the foundation for the next 5 weather topics.

Topic Two: The Precipitation Process

- Explaining exactly how clouds and precipitation form and what types of precipitation there are (there are more than you'd think!).

Topic Three: Thunderstorm Development

- In the past two videos we learned about two of the necessary ingredients for storms. Now, let's put them together and find out how a thunderstorm develops.

Topic Four: All About Lightning

- Now that we have a storm, what is lightning? And why is it so important in our atmosphere?

Topic Five: Tornado Basics

- The video you've all been waiting for: tornadoes! It's time to put everything together from Tier One and Tier Two and go into the details of how a tornado forms, as well as other facts and characteristics.

Topic Six: Hurricane Basics
- Last, but most certainly not least, hurricanes! We now know how a thunderstorm produces a tornado, but how does a hurricane form? We'll also get into the messy business of when to call a hurricane a typhoon, when hurricane season is for each ocean region, and who exactly is in charge of forecasting these hurricanes and typhoons across the globe.
